Alberta Cannabis Age and Possession Limits: What Adults Need to Know
Alberta's minimum age
Alberta's public health guidance describes non-medical cannabis as legal use by people aged 18 or older. This is the provincial minimum-age answer; it is not the same as rules in other provinces, or the eligibility rules for federally authorized medical cannabis. Retailers may require valid identification.
The public possession limit
The federal Cannabis Act framework allows adults to possess up to 30 grams of legal dried cannabis in public, or the equivalent amount in another legal form. The 30-gram figure refers to dried-cannabis equivalent, not automatically 30 grams of every product. Check the federal equivalency rules for concentrates, edibles and other forms.
This is a public possession limit, not a complete summary of where cannabis may be used, purchased, stored or transported. Province, municipality, property owner and transportation rules can add restrictions. Medical authorizations may follow a separate framework.
Keep these questions separate
- Age and purchase: confirm you meet Alberta's minimum age and buy through an authorized source.
- Possession: use the federal dried-cannabis equivalent, not package weight alone.
- Driving: possession does not make impaired driving lawful. Do not drive while impaired.
- Travel: domestic travel and international border crossing have different rules. Canada says not to take cannabis across its international border.
- Medical use: confirm the applicable federal authorization and carry its documentation; do not assume adult-use rules answer a medical question.
