The short answer
The available research does not establish that cannabis causes GERD or relieves reflux. One large inpatient database analysis found different associations across esophagitis, stricture and cancer outcomes; its cross-sectional design cannot determine cause and effect. A systematic review also describes heterogeneous, limited GI evidence. These findings are not a personal treatment guide.

A useful way to discuss symptoms
Record when reflux occurs, meals, cannabis product and route, other substances, and medicines, then discuss persistent symptoms with a qualified clinician. Do not start, stop or substitute cannabis for prescribed GERD treatment because of observational findings. For interactions, see our medication overview.
Questions readers ask
Does cannabis treat acid reflux?
These sources do not establish cannabis as a GERD treatment. The observational evidence is not proof of benefit.
Does cannabis cause GERD?
The studies cannot establish that. Findings are mixed and may be affected by confounding and study design.
