Federal status update (as of 2026-04-04): Marijuana remains a Schedule I substance under federal law. DOJ/DEA's 2024 rescheduling proposal remains pending, and no final federal rule has been published. See the Federal Register links in the U.S. overview.

• Adult-use and medical cannabis are legal under California law, with licensing, packaging/labeling, testing, and retail compliance enforced by the state.
• Local control: Cities and counties may restrict retail stores, delivery, on-site consumption, and cultivation. Check local rules before buying or consuming.
• Age and access: Access and identification requirements apply at licensed retailers. Bring valid government-issued ID.

Possession, Use, and Places

• Public vs. private: Usage rules differ across public spaces, housing, parks, and event venues. Private property may set stricter rules; landlords/HOAs can restrict use.
• No federal property: Do not possess or use cannabis on federal land (e.g., certain beaches, national parks, federal buildings) even within California.
• Events & lounges: Only where specifically permitted and licensed; confirm venue and local rules.

Cultivation & Products

• Home cultivation: Permitted under state law within specific limits and local conditions (security, visibility, nuisance). Always confirm your city/county ordinance and state guidance.
• Products & labels: Potency, child-resistant packaging, and warning labels are mandatory. Review DCC guidance before purchasing.

Driving, Transport, and Travel

• DUI/Impairment: Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal. Penalties and enforcement standards apply--review DMV/CHP guidance before driving.
• Vehicle rules: Open-container style restrictions can apply to cannabis products in vehicles--store appropriately per state law.
• Borders & flights: Do not carry cannabis across state or national borders or onto federal property, including many airport areas under federal control.

Buying Safely

• Licensed retailers only. Verify licensing using the DCC resources. Illicit market products may lack testing and accurate labeling.
• Receipts & packaging: Keep receipts and store products in original packaging when transporting.
