California Medical vs. Adult-Use Cannabis: Age and Rule Differences
Adult-use access
California DCC says adult-use customers must be 21 or older and show acceptable identification. Product categories have different possession and purchase limits, so check the current rule for the specific form.
Medicinal access
DCC says medicinal customers may be 18 or older with a physician recommendation. It describes higher possession and purchase allowances for medicinal users, subject to applicable documentation and rules. Ask the licensed retailer what documents are required. A medical recommendation does not establish that cannabis is suitable for a particular condition or compatible with medicines; discuss treatment questions with a qualified clinician.
Rules that remain separate
Neither pathway erases local property restrictions, impaired-driving prohibitions, or federal limits. California DCC says cannabis remains federally illegal, including on federal land and across state lines. A California medical recommendation by itself does not change those limits.
For travel across Canada's border, current Travel.gc.ca guidance says cannabis may be taken across only with authorization from Health Canada and the relevant authorities of every country visited or transited. That authorization is not the same as a medical prescription; other medical-cannabis exemptions are rare and exceptional. Do not assume a California medical recommendation is authorization. For other international routes, check the current requirements of every country involved.
For general California rules, see California cannabis laws.
Quick FAQ
What is the minimum age for adult-use cannabis in California?
California DCC says adult-use customers must be 21 or older.
Can someone under 21 access medicinal cannabis?
DCC says a medicinal patient may be 18 or older with a physician recommendation. Confirm current documentation and retailer requirements.
Does a California medical recommendation by itself authorize cannabis travel across a state or international border?
No. California DCC says cannabis is federally illegal, including across state lines. For Canada's border, Travel.gc.ca says travel with cannabis requires Health Canada and every visited or transit country's authorization; this is not the same as a medical prescription, and other medical-cannabis exemptions are rare. A California recommendation alone is not that authorization.
